one of the difference is on the type of scanner you're using to detect
access point, there are active, and passive scanners..... active scanner
only see access points that have the ssid broadcast turned on, and
passive scanners they see both ssid turned on and off. examples of
active scanner: netstumbler
passive scanner: kismet
